We've collated a few known issues here for your information:-

AIL Lay-bys/Meeting Points for Escort
The following are the main AIL Lay-by/Escort meeting points for the region off the M4 corridor.  Due to the nature of the M4 in SE Wales, there maybe insufficient meeting points suitable for AILs adjacent to entering some Force areas.  Where the load has an EU or UK CB-Radio and/or, we may be able to meet/leave your load 'rolling'.

Gwent Police Force Area

AILs entering or leaving Wales requiring Escort in the Gwent Police area can be met:-

From M4 East:-

At the designated Abnormal Load Lay-by located beneath the M4 at J22/Pilning (accessible from all directions).

at the Dixton Lay-by on the southbound A40 (just NE of Monmouth) albeit this is not a designated Abnormal Load lay-by (NB: this Lay-by is ONLY accessible by southbound traffic – miss it and a double-back is a long way).

A Designated Abnormal Load lay-by is also situated further up the M50 at the M50 turn-off J8/M5 (accessible from all directions).

From M4 West:-

At the designated Abnormal Load Lay-by located at the A470 turn-off,  (accessible from all directions).J32/M4

South Wales Police Force Area

AILs entering or leaving Wales requiring Escort in the South Wales Police area can be met:-

From M4 East:-

Generally an AIL requiring an Escort in the South Wales Police area will also require an Escort in Gwent (see above).  Notwithstanding, due to the nature of the M4 there are no appropriate Lay-bys close to the SW Police border:-

Magor Services off J32a/M4 – no designated AIL area but adequate access for all but the largest AILs

From M4 West:-

Pont Abraham Services off J49/M4 – no designated AIL area but adequate access for all but the largest AILs.  Although outside the force area of South Wales, the M4 up to J49 is covered by the SW Police Traffic Unit.

Other:-

Cardiff West Services - for loads travelling into Cardiff, Penarth, Barry etc via the A4232 off J33/M4 – no designated AIL area but adequate access for all but the largest AILs.

Dyfed-Powys Police Force Area

AILs entering or leaving Wales requiring Escort in the South Wales Police area can be met:-

From East:-

St Clears – A lay-by suitable for most AIL (not designated) exists on the .A40 westbound just prior to St Clears

Pont Abraham Services off J49/M4 – no designated AIL area but adequate access for all but the largest AILs.

From West:-

Any AIL entering the area from the West will be entering via one of the Ports which should have adequate waiting areas.
